The aim of this overview is to provide up-to-date and comprehensive information on the development of the ICT sector, identify factors affecting employment, and present a broader context of this strategic industry in Slovakia, with an emphasis on the Košice region.
This overview is based on data obtained from official sources, including Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, CVTI SR, and a survey conducted by us—the Košice IT Valley cluster. Specific sources are cited in each section.
Population of the Košice and Prešov Regions
The Košice Region has a population of 779,505 which represents approximately 14.4% of Slovakia’s total population. The Prešov Region, with a population of 808,090, is the largest region in Slovakia by population, accounting for approximately 14.9% of the total population of the country.
Unemployment Rate in Slovakia
The unemployment rate in Slovakia remained at a long-term low in the third quarter of 2024, reaching 5.4%. This represents the second-lowest recorded value in history. Compared to the same period of the previous year (third quarter of 2023), the number of unemployed persons decreased by 9%.
Share of Employment in the ICT Sector in Slovakia
The share of employment in the information and communication technology sector in Slovakia accounted for 4.2% of total employment in 2023. The ICT sector is therefore one of the key industries of the national economy, contributing to job creation and the country’s economic development. The proportion of those employed in the ICT sector has been growing steadily and is nearing the EU average, which stands at 4.7%.
Revenue from Goods and Services in the ICT Sector
Revenue from goods and services in Slovakia’s ICT sector reached €2.48 billion in the third quarter of 2024. This represents a 4.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The sector has consistently generated quarterly revenues exceeding €2 billion over the long term.

Number of People Working in the ICT Sector in Slovakia
From the perspective of employment, the information and communication technology sector represents a significant part of the Slovak economy. According to data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, the average number of employed persons in the ICT sector in the third quarter of 2024 reached 81,122. Compared to the same period of the previous year (third quarter of 2023), this represents a year-on-year increase of 1.7%.
Share of Women in the ICT Sector
According to data from Eurostat, the share of women in the ICT sector in Slovakia is 17.4%. This represents a year-on-year increase of 2.5 percentage points. A survey conducted by Košice IT Valley found that women account for 30.1% of employees in companies based in Košice. The roles most frequently held by women include Scrum Master, Project Manager, and Business Analyst.
Active ICT Entities in Košice
In 2023, there were 1,184 legal entities operating in the ICT sector in Košice, representing a 7.7% increase compared to 2022.
Open Job Positions in the ICT Sector in the Košice Region
In January 2025, approximately 315 job openings in the ICT field were listed on the Profesia.sk portal in the Košice Region. However, this represents a year-on-year decrease of 44.8% compared to the same period in 2024.
Average Salary of an Employee in the ICT Sector in Slovakia
The average monthly salary of an employee in the ICT sector in the third quarter of 2024 was €2,365, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.1%.
Average Turnover Rate in the ICT Sector in Košice
According to a 2023 survey by Košice IT Valley, the average turnover rate in Košice was found to be 9.7%. The main reasons for employee turnover include better opportunities, salary conditions in other companies, and high competition in a relatively small market.
University Students and Graduates Suitable for the ICT Sector
In the 2024/2025 academic year, 4,328 students are studying relevant fields for the ICT sector in Košice. These fields include programs at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the Technical University of Košice, as well as programs under the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Informatics at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. In 2024, a total of 965 students successfully graduated from these programs, representing a qualified workforce prepared for the ICT sector in Košice.
